Get Fit During Blood Pressure Awareness Month

May is National Blood Pressure Awareness Month, and we are turning our attention towards the signs and prevention of conditions like hypertension as well as how to maintain a healthy blood pressure level throughout your life.

Fact About High Blood Pressure

About 75 million adults in the US (almost one third of adults) have high blood pressure, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The most common causes of high blood pressure include:

  • Smoking and excessive drinking
  • Obesity and lack of exercise
  • Stress
  • Poor diet (too much salt)
  • Age
  • Family history and genetics
  • Kidney, adrenal and thyroid diseases

The symptoms of high blood pressure are essentially non-existent, giving the condition it’s nickname, “the silent killer.” The CDC reports that as recent as 2013, high blood pressure was the main or a contributing cause of more than 360,000 deaths per year in the US.

Preventing High Blood Pressure

Since there are no symptoms of high blood pressure, one of the best methods of early diagnosis and prevention is regularly having your blood pressure checked by a medical professional.

Besides regular physicals, you can also maintain a healthy blood pressure level by:

  • Limiting alcohol consumption and not smoking
  • Reducing and coping with stress
  • Maintaining a healthy diet and limiting sodium intake
  • Prevent or treat kidney, adrenal and thyroid diseases

Don’t Forget to Exercise!

Studies have found that a simple 30-minute workout at least once a week can help in preventing and reducing high blood pressure. Increasing your exercise to 60-90 minute intervals helps even more, but if your time is limited, all you need it 30 minutes here and there to help you stay healthy.

There are plenty of ways to exercise. From running/walking to yoga, martial arts and lifting weights, you can choose the workout that works best for your schedule (make sure it’s one that you enjoy, as well). Even doing a thirty minute routine on MMA bags will get your heart rate going and keep you healthy.
